NHSN Steering Member, Dr. Hortensia Amaro, receives recogntition by MSPP
Each year, the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (MSPP) seeks to recognize a few individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the mental health of their community by conferring upon them the Doctor of Humane Letters degree at Commencement. This year, Dr. Hortensia Amaro, NHSN Steering Committee member and Institute of Medicine member has been selected for recognition. Dr. Amaro has shown an unequalled commitment to the care of those suffering with substance abuse disorders and HIV/AIDS in this country. Though her prodigious scholarship, she has developed and tested intervention models and methods of treatment that have come to serve as examples of best practice in both public health and mental health. Her productive research career, impressively, integrates an equal investment in developing and delivering services for those whom she studies. Dr. Amaro’s MOM’s Project and the Entre Familia program are not only wonderful demonstrations of her capacity to integrate scholarship with clinical care, but they are also evidence of her exceptional creativity and compassion. In addition to her clinical and academic work, she has generously given her time and expertise as a consultant to governmental commissions and committees and to a variety of professional groups and programs. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Hortensia Amaro for this grand achievement!
