Joe L. Martinez, Jr. earned a BA in Psychology from the University of
San Diego in 1966, an MS in Psychology from New Mexico Highlands
University in 1968 and completed a Ph.D. at the University of
Delaware in 1971 with a specialization in Physiological Psychology.
He is interested in how the brain stores information and he has over
185 publications. His popular edited book (with Ray Kesner),
Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, 2nd edition was recently
(2007) published by Academic Press. He served for 13 years as a
Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of
California, Berkeley where he is now an emeritus professor.
Currently, he holds the Ewing Halsell Distinguished Chair in the
Biology Department at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He
received the Raza Recognition Award in 1986 by the University of
California, Berkeley, “…in acknowledgment of your support and
commitment to the McNair Scholars Program and its goals. We are
grateful to you for your contribution to increasing the number of lowincome,
first-generation and underrepresented college students who
pursue doctoral study.” the American Association for the
Advancement of Science, Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement in
1994, For having guided the lives of literally thousands of students
and hundreds of women and ethnic minorities to educational pursuits
and careers in science as a teacher, advisor, role model friend and
confidant. National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse,
“Outstanding Mentorship Award, 2001, “Dedication in bringing young
Latino and Native American students into careers in the sciences and
significant contribution to the field of drug abuse as a researcher and
as a role model.” He received (along with James Townsel) the
Association of Neuroscience Departments and Programs’, 2003
Education Award at the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting in
New Orleans in November 2003, …”in recognition of his contributions
to education and training in neuroscience.” Currently he is an
Associate Editor for the American Psychologist, serves on the Peer
Review Advisory Committee for the Center Scientific Review, the
Committee on Diversity in Neuroscience for the Society for
Neuroscience, the Steering Committee of the National Hispanic
Science Network on Drug Abuse and he directs the American
Psychological Association’s Diversity Program in Neuroscience and
the Summer Program in Neuroscience, Ethics, and Survival
(SPINES), a month long course, at the Marine Biological Laboratory
in Woods Hole, MA.
